Resumen del artículo publicado en la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de Estados Unidos.
Se realizó un ensayo aleatorio, doble ciego, controlado con placebo con grupo placebo (PLAG), grupo citrulina (CITG), grupo extracto de remolacha (BRG) y grupo con combinación de extracto de remolacha y citrulina (CIT-BRG) con 3g de citrulina y 2,1g de extracto de remolacha (300mg de nitrato) durante 9 semanas de entrenamiento controlado.
La muestra estuvo compuesta por 32 triatletas aficionados masculinos, con más de 5 años de experiencia en triatlón. Edad entre 28 y 36 años, IMC entre 20,48 y 24,36 kg/m2 y grasa corporal entre 6,75 y 8,85%.
Los deportistas tuvieron consultas con nutricionista, médico y fisioterapeuta para tener el mejor seguimiento individualizado posible. No fuman, no beben alcohol, no tienen enfermedades y no toman medicamentos. Y dos semanas antes del estudio dejaron de tomar suplementos para no interferir en los resultados.
Las pruebas realizadas para comparar el rendimiento fueron: prueba de salto horizontal (HJUMP), prueba con dinamómetro manual (DYN), pruebas abdominales (1-MAT), (test de Cooper (prueba en cinta rodante de 12 min de duración donde se marca la distancia recorrida y se evalúa, a través de una fórmula, la capacidad respiratoria y el VO2 máximo) y evaluación antropométrica.La comparación se realizó en T1 (inicio del estudio) y T2 (final del estudio)
Resultados encontrados por el estudio
La evaluación antropométrica no mostró diferencias significativas entre los grupos en el período de tiempo determinado, sin embargo, se observó un aumento de la masa muscular, entre T1 y T2, en el grupo que fue suplementado con extracto de remolacha y citrulina (CIT-BRG).
Al observar las diferencias de rendimiento entre los grupos en T1 y T2, no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los grupos en las pruebas HJUMP, DYN, 1-MAT, o entre los grupos.
Cuando enfocamos la atención en la diferencia entre T1 y T2 de cada grupo se observó una mejora en el desempeño del grupo CIT-BRG en las pruebas: 1-MAT, HJUMP, Cooper Test. Todos los grupos tuvieron mejores resultados en la prueba DYN en T2.
De este estudio, podemos concluir que la suplementación combinada de Citrulina y extracto de remolacha (nitrato), durante 9 semanas, aumenta el VO2max y la potencia muscular.
